Biodiversity in the olive grove and … on the plate!

Sant’Anna School

Val Graziosa Farmer Cluster

Edible wild plants are a valuable resource for our physical and mental health and well-being when used in cooking, as natural health remedies, for cosmetics, but they are expecially an an essential component of any ecosystem.

On 7th April, at ‘Sano e Pisano’ farm, with Silvia Benucci who is a farmer of the OliValGraziosa cluster in Calci, took place the long-awaited event dedicated to the knowledge of spontaneous edible plants that enrich the plant component of the biodiversity of olive groves.

The initiative included a lesson by the farmer on wild edible plants we were going to explore. This was followed by a walk for observation and identification for which a booklet produced by the farmer and also the iNaturalist app were used. During the walk in the olive grove, the plants illustrated in the theoretical talk were collected and used for some preparations. Local oil was used and promoted, in particular that of other olive growers in the cluster, and participants actively contributed to the preparations.

Twenty people, including olive growers, people from local associations and citizens, took part in this event, which had the important function of making people reflecting on the possibilities offered by farm diversification in terms of production and activities related to the production process, as well as demonstrating the importance of an approach aimed at optimising the management and conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services on their farms and in their territory.

The inclusion of this initiative in the cluster’s activities focused on the farmer, represented the start of a specific action for this farm, which then held other days dedicated to edible plants, officinal plants and dyeing plants with the support and participation of citizens very keen about the topic, but also with the support of the various components of the cluster: representatives of associations, other olive growers included and not in the cluster itself, and members of the Scuola Sant’Anna team.
