Local BioBlitz 2024

Sant’Anna School
Val Graziosa Farmer Cluster
New perspective for citizen science on Monte Pisano. The involvement of local organisations is working and we have hopes that the Framework project will leave its mark on this area.
On Saturday afternoon, the 4th of May 2024, the second Monte Pisano Bioblitz was held, promoted by the Natural History Museum of the University of Pisa, in collaboration with Sportello Agroecologico di Calci and the Institute of Plant Sciences of Sant’Anna School. The event was attended by 45 people including some olive growers from the OliValGraziosa cluster of the Framework project.
Instructions on the use of iNaturalist have been provided and there were 42 observations for a total of 61 plant, 17 animal and 1 fungal species.
Along the path, the groups were guided by botanical experts, with stops at five stations presided over by zoological experts who described the species observed by the participants, entertained them with small workshops and answered questions and curiosities, especially from the youngest!

Three different groups passed through the event, along a path leading to the “Parco della Ricordanza” in Montemagno. The Park, which was inaugurated in May 2023, is a tribute to the efforts of the volunteers who took action following the devastating fire that hit this area in September 2018. It is an ever-growing place of memory and culture of sustainability, equipped with beautiful thematic panels and usable by both local citizens and occasional visitors. In the park elements linked to traditional agricultural practices such as olive trees and dry stone walls coexist with natural elements characteristic of this territory.

The event ended with a take-and-share aperitif in an equipped area of the Park.
We are very happy to have been able to hand over to organisations operating in the area that will promote other bioblitzes on Monte Pisano in the years to come!
