The Church of Saint Martin

The Church of Saint Martin (Benedetto Gatti picture)  is the oldest church in Montemagno, already mentioned in a document dated  780 d. C.
During the XIII Century, the Church lost the role of parish church and was replaced by the Church of Saint Mary of the Snows.

During the XV Century, the Santissimo Sacramento (o della Buona Morte) Company,  whose members were involved in the funeral service of the associates, had the Church in its keeping.
The Church stands in an isolated position with respect to the village, with the cemetery jointed.

The gabled facade, now plastered, has a simple entrance door in the center surmounted by a rectangular window. The only other openings are a door on the left side, which leads to the sacristy and the bell tower, and two small windows on the side walls of the choir. The bell tower were one of the old guard towers which belonged to the defensive system of the Verruca fortress.  The tower was made of exposed stone, and then it has been heavily remodeled in the upper part and is now incorporated into the walls surrounding the cemetery.

The interior has a single nave and ends with a rectangular presbytery, raised from the floor of the hall by three steps. Altars along the sides are dedicated to Saint Martino and to Our Lady of Annunciation. An ancient Mayor Altar “a Colonnini”, of which only a few examples are still  present in Tuscany, is preserved on the centre. The Mayor Altar is framed by a triumphal arch closed in the lower part by a partition wall in local stone (pietra serena),  which separates the presbytery area, dedicated to the celebration, from the rear area, dedicated to the choir.

The Church  preserves  the relics of Saint Coronato, the Montemagno Patron Saint, and the paper mache statue of Our Lady of Sorrow.
