Tra le sei escursioni previste per il Bioblitz del Monte Pisano ci siamo occupati dell’organizzazione di quello del 26 aprile al Parco della Ricordanza.

Ci siamo trovati sabato alle 15.30 al parcheggio di Montemagno, Calci, e, guidati da Sabrina Rocca, guida escursionistica , abbiamo raggiunto a piedi il Parco della Ricordanza . Siamo passati dai vicoli del paese costeggiando vari muretti a secco. Il Parco si sviluppa su un terreno terrazzato colpito dall’incendio del settembre 2018. Qui abbiamo esplorato i vari micro-ambienti per monitorarne la flora e la fauna: il torrente che costeggia il Parco con Roberta Sabelli, l’uliveto con il prato, la macchia mediterranea e il boschetto di sughere con Marco della Casa e Silvia Sorbi e parlato dei mammiferi presenti nella zona con Michele Malasoma. Al termine siamo scesi e abbiamo gustato al parchetto del paese di Montemagno l’aperitivo a cui hanno contributo la “Strada dell’Olio dei Monti Pisani” e l’azienda agricola “Gallo Verde”.

A new Citizen Science Challenge in Monte Pisano area

The involvement of local organisations works! We have evidence that the project is leaving its mark on the territory
From April 25 to 28, 2025, a new citizen science event took place on Monte Pisano, promoted within the framework of the European Framework project. The initiative confirmed the value of collaboration between scientific institutions, local organizations, and citizens, strengthening the connection between knowledge, participation, and the territory.
The Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies and the Natural History Museum of the University of Pisa, in collaboration with the Department of Biology of the University of Pisa, the Monti Pisani Olive Oil Route, and the municipalities of Buti, Calci, San Giuliano Terme, Vecchiano, and Vicopisano, organized nature excursions on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 April. These were led by certified guides and experts to monitor the presence of plant and animal species using the iNaturalist app. Each excursion concluded with a light meal offered thanks to the contribution of the involved institutions and the Olive Oil Route.
This year’s event saw a remarkable increase in participation and data collected compared to 2023. In 2025, a total of 1,458 observations were recorded—more than triple the 416 observations from 2023. The number of identified species also more than doubled, from 195 in 2023 to 428 in 2025. The number of observers grew from 35 to 91, and identifiers increased from 111 to 146, reflecting a growing and engaged community contributing to the monitoring of local biodiversity.
Once again, the event brought together adults, families, and curious young people, who explored the various environments of Monte Pisano alongside botanists, zoologists, and biodiversity experts. The observations, collected and shared via iNaturalist, contributed to building a collective inventory of local flora and fauna. The friendly atmosphere and direct interaction with specialists made each outing an engaging and accessible informal learning opportunity.
A further concrete step towards a more aware scientific citizenship, capable of valuing and protecting the natural heritage of its own territory.
